Humaita, Amazonas, Brazil

Settlers build a house on a newly deforested plot of land alongside the BR-319 road near the village of Realidade. The highway, inaugurated in 1976, which is not yet completely paved, is the only land access connecting Manaus to the rest of the country. It was delivered asphalted, but the lack of maintenance caused it to lose its pavement until it became impassable in 1988. In the Amazon, no human intervention provokes as many changes as a road. If authorised, the complete asphalting of BR-319 and its vicinities, could spread the model of chaotic occupation of the Amazon, opening space in the heart of the forest for the uncontrolled exploitation of wood, which opens space for illegal deforestation and land grabbing.
