Sukurbanu (65) has lived in the Rupnagar slum since childhood. Recently she fell from a hanging toilet. She often suffers from water born diseases and says the lack of sanitation makes life miserable. Her three daughters face a long queue to use toilet facilities before they go to work. Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) and Panos Pictures have documented women and girls and their toilet facilities in 20 countries across every continent to build a visual representation of the day-to-day reality and the effect this has on their lives, both positive and negative. Having access to a safe toilet facility can equal dignity, safety, education, employment and status. My Toilet: Global Stories from Women and Girls will be exhibited at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery, London from 17th to 22nd November 2014.
