Bosembele, Ombella-M'Poko prefecture, Central African Republic

Table in Nadine's house with food grown on her plot of land - corn cob, bananas, thinly sliced squash leaves, ground nuts - handmade bracelets and talisman to ward off evil. Nadine is a Concern (UK NGO) supported Mama Lumiere or lead mother in her community. She passes on her skills and knowledge to other women and encourages mothers to take their children to the nearby health facility at the first sign of malnutrition or sickness. In each home he visited Chris asked the owners to select items of food and other possessions which were important to them, to create the centre piece for a still life. Each tableau tells their owner's story. Chris de Bode was continually struck by how few possessions there were in each home. This is one of a series of still lifes telling the story of this post-conflict region in CAR.
