Asmara, Eritrea

The Cinema Impero on Independence Avenue. Built in 1937 by architect Mario Messina. Asmara is a showcase of 1930s Italian Art Deco architecture. Initially created by colonial-era Italians, the style continued to flourish in the 1960s as local architects carried on the tradition. UNESCO is considering making the city a World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding Modernist architecture.
