Monrovia, LIBERIA

The Ducor Palace Hotel sits on a hill overlooking Monrovia. The history of the hotel mirrors the economic and political development of the country. It was a five star luxury hotel before the civil war started at the end of 1989. It then became a refuge for political leaders and the country's elite, which lead to it coming under heavy fire and looting by rebel armies. Since 2003 it has been home to hundreds of displaced people. Slowly the government is rehousing the displaced and the building will be restored to its original status as a luxury hotel.
