The festival of Gai Jatra (the cow festival), celebrated throughout the Kathmandu Valley, but most intensely here in Bhaktapur. Revellers dress up, often as cows, who it is believed can guide the dead to Yama, the god of the underworld. Floats carrying photographs and belongings of deceased relatives are paraded through the city, and groups of men and children dance energetically.
