The hand of a fisherman on a 'kwassa kwassa' boat of the type that he also pilots to transport irregular migrants, up to ten at a time, from the island of Anjouan in the Comoros to the French island of Mayotte, some 80km distant. Despite having twice been caught and imprisoned on Mayotte, he explains that he continues to make trips, sometimes several times in a month. He earns several hundred euros per trip where a night's fishing might earn him 40 euros, or sometimes nothing. Estimates of the number of Comorians who have died on such crossings number in the thousands, with some comparing it to migration across the mediterranean.
