Asmara, Eritrea

The Rationalist and Cubist influenced Cinema Odeon building, built in 1937 by architects Guiseppe Zacche and Guiseppe Borziani and is still open for business today. Asmara is a showcase of 1930s Italian Art Deco architecture. Initially brought to the region by colonial-era Italians, the style continued to flourish into the 1960s as local architects furthered the distinctive designs. UNESCO is considering making the city a World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding Modernist architecture.
