Sillamae, Estonia

The sunset in Sillamae, a predominantly Russian city on the Gulf of Finland in the north west of Estonia. The 25 metre high hill, in the background, is a waste dump of 25 million tons of uranium, dating from the Soviet-era when Sillamae was a closed town. In 1998 the German company Vismut started to isolate and cover the dump. After ten years the job, which cost 20 million Euro, was complete and safety guaranteed for the next 1000 years.
