Wushan, Yangtze river, CHINA

The Three Gorges Dam Project will force up to 1.3 million people to leave their homes when they are flooded by the new, 600km-long lake. Wushan, a typical small Chinese city with narrow streets and a busy atmosphere, will be flooded in 2003. The new Wushan is being built about 200 metres higher and three times bigger. Signs on the hillside show the future water level. The final level of 175m will be reached in 2009.
