Trainee surgeon Tagi Gbawuru-Mansary at Aberdeen Womens Centre. The Aberdeen Womens Centre is the only centre for fistula repair in Sierra Leone and is able to treat around 600 women a year. Fistulae are caused by birth complications and/or trauma sustained from rape where a hole (fistula) develops between the vagina and the rectum or the vagina and the bladder, causing chronic incontinence. According to the World Health Organisation, between 2 and 4 million women in Africa are affected by obstetric fistula with around 80% of them developing the condition before they turn 15.
