Valentin Chesheiko, 43, his wife Yanina Nikitina, 35, and Nestor, one, Anastasia, 13, and Michael, four years old. The family, Bessarabian Bulgarians, was living in the Crimea prior to its annexation by Russia in March 2014. Valentin worked for a local publishing house that produced pro-Ukrainian literature and this led to threats against his life. The family left for Donetsk, where his mother was living, and from there onto Bulgaria where they were housed by Kolio Atanasov, a businessman from Stara Zagora. Atanasov offered to house and find jobs for 150 Bessarabian Bulgarian families fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.
