Wadeye police station and courthouse positioned on the main road in the middle of town. The area on the main road around the police station and courthouse has been the location of much of the town's violent crimes. Police have installed many CCTV cameras on the main road and use the technology to record fights and identify those involved using the only local Aboriginal police liaison officer.
Wadeye is the largest Aboriginal town in the Northern Territory. Its seven different tribes were dispossessed of their land and forced to live together by a Catholic mission that was established in 1935. The resultant community was beset by problems that stemmed from this loss of land, language and culture resulting in many social problems, tension and violence especially among the youth.
