North, SRI LANKA

Washing a statue of Saint Sebastian outside a Catholic church on the road to Jaffna. Like all the surrounding buildings, the statue is riddled with bullets after 20 years of bitter conflict. After decades of civil war, a ceasefire agreement was signed between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels in February 2002. Despite the devastation wrought on the infrastructure of the country, and the remaining unexploded ordnance (UXO), thousands of people have begun returning to their homes.
