Mendoza, Argentina

Winemaker Virginia Leopardi pours a glass of organic red wine at Finca La Rosenda.

Leopardi and her partner Alejandro Schettini are part of the new vanguard of Argentinean winemakers who are challenging the status quo.

At the tiny Finca La Rosenda, Leopardi and Schettini produce five different organic wines. Their best is a blend of Syrah and 'Criollo' varieties, which Leopardi calls 'a vindication' of the typical Argentine table wine, referring to the wine industry's typically snobby response to criollo grapes, which were brought here in the 1500s and have largely been superceded by Malbec and other second-generation varieties.
