Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria

Women from Mainari village near Maiduguri outside their makeshift shelters in an IDP camp surrounded by their children. Just two weeks earliers they had been harvesting maize and had narrowly escaped capture by insurgents. They appeared to still be in shock because of what had happened to them.

''It was about 9:30am, we hadn't been there long'', they said, ''We were harvesting in a cornfield, the plants are quite high. We heard shooting from guns nearby and we looked up. We saw about 30 men dressed in camouflage, dressed in red and different colours. They all had scarves on their heads. We knew who they were. We knew what they were. Then we saw the bodies on the ground, bleeding. We immediately ran. We ran as fast as we could. They kept shooting. Maybe they were firing at us, we are not sure, we just ran. We ran through a long deserted and destroyed village and ran about five kilometres to the trench, to safety.''
