Kroo Bay, Freetown, Sierra Leone

Young men carry heavy bags of charcoal from a tugboat ankored just off the coast into Kroo Bay Slum. Kroo Bay, a slum built on a rubbish dump on the eastern outskirts of the capital Freetown, houses around 6,500 people. The rubbish that is washed down the hill from the city toward Kroo Bay is compacted in the bay to the extent that houses can be built on the surface, thus reclaiming land from the sea. Most young men in the slum also scanvenge the ever growing rubbish for anything of value, mostly precious metals which they extract by burning with rubber tyres.
