Zau Rein Awng, a 23 year old Kachin boy, washes his clothes at the Yuzana Pat Jasan centre. Awng was working in the jade mines in Hpakant where he also became addicted to heroin. He was arrested on the Valentine's day, a date he now claims to hate. Pat Jasan is a church-based anti-drugs organisation that operates with no official authority. The massive rates of poppy growth and heroin production in Kachin State have largely been ignored by the government leading some to speculate that this is a deliberate policy to keep the restive state addicted as another way of fighting the pro-independence insurrection. Others believe corrupt military and police, often in cahoots with the region's drug lords, are the real reasons behind the inaction. Pat Jasan runs awareness and education campaigns and non-violent attempts to restrict poppy growth and the trade in opium. However, their detox and rehab centres, which revolve around prayer and religious education, are controversial as they include vigilante teams who seek out and Ă¢€˜arrest' addicts who are put in chains and forcibly detoxed without medication.
